Photography on the Web:
The Endless Variety

(posted 2/28/97)

For the first article on Photography on the Web we'll discuss some plans for this site. But first I would like to show some of my favorite sites that illustrate the variety of uses, styles and types of photography on the Web; from the blatantly commercial to the movingly historic, from the abstract to the literal.

If you can, open these two front pages together on the same screen. The first is a site created by commercial photographer Eric Meola and the second a site set up to celebrate the 1940's work of Arkansas photographer Mike Disfarmer. The tone of the portraits of the two photographers on the right side of the two front pages perfectly compliment their photographs on the left and contrast each other.

Other studies in contrast are Detroit Free Press Photographer David Turnley's black and white photo journalistic pictures of Afghanistan The Taliban and Judy Herrmann and Michael Starke of the Herrman/Starke Studio's computer generated images or the contrast between Robert Meyer's fashion photographs and Mark Turner's horticultural pictures in his Photographics Garden Portfolio.

The beauty of the examples above is that they are just a click away in Cyberspace and the number of them seems infinite. As of this writing Yahoo lists 800 photographer sites. Webites can spend hours exploring the variety of styles and subject matters in Photography on the Web.

But, Photography on the Web will discuss topics from Realspace as well. Planned for future features are visits to: (Art)n Lab the physical site of (Art)n Gallery in Evanston, Illinois, the University of Wisconsin Satellite Imaging facility in Madison, a newspaper electronic imaging operation and a web camera site.
